Password-based encryption (PBE)
In a PKI, the owner of a PKI identity typically specifies a password string for a PBE key generation function to symmetrically encrypt the private key of a public-private key pair. Because the private key is the owners identity and only the owner knows the password to be able to access and use the private key, the private key therefore represents the person who knows that password.
