Using Security with the Schema Tool

The Schema Tool supports the SSL encryption security feature, which converts data into a form that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized users. For more information on the SSL Encryption feature, see "SSL Encryption."
When creating or opening a schema definition, the Schema Tool accesses data from the server for the purpose of object mapping and generating column statistics. This process requires data to be transferred over networks, which can make data vulnerable to interception by unauthorized parties. If your data contains sensitive information, you should consider enabling SSL encryption to provide a more secure transmission of data.
To enable SSL encryption, you must specify the appropriate values for security-related options. Configuring these options for the Schema Tool requires using different processes for the Windows and Unix/Linux versions of the product. See the following sections for information about configuring security on the Schema Tool for your platform. For a list of security-related options, see "Summary of Security-Related Options."
