Using the Connectivity Service

When installed and configured, the DataDirect Cloud Driver for ODBC connects to a DataDirect Cloud Data Source, which in turn handles communication with the cloud data store. The DataDirect Cloud connectivity service executes SQL calls from applications and supports operations on data such as queries, inserts, updates, deletes, invocation of stored procedures, and queries of metadata. The following illustration shows the relationship between the DataDirect components, an application using ODBC, and the cloud data stores:
To use the DataDirect Cloud connectivity service you must first obtain a Progress ID and evaluate or purchase DataDirect Cloud. Providing application access to cloud data requires the following general steps:
1. Log in to your account.
2. Use the DataDirect Cloud dashboard to create a cloud Data Source that contains parameters defining how to connect to a cloud data store as described in Creating a Data Source Definition.
3. Download and install the DataDirect Cloud Driver for ODBC as described in Installation on Windows Systems, Installation and Configuration on UNIX and Linux Systems, and Getting Started.
4. Optionally, set up an ODBC data source and test the connection to the cloud data store as described in Configuring and Testing an ODBC Data Source on Windows Systems or Configuring an ODBC Data Source on UNIX and Linux Systems.
5. Configure your application to use the DataDirect Cloud Driver for ODBC data source as described in Connecting Applications to the Connectivity Service.
See the following short videos that demonstrate these procedures:
*Downloading and installing the ODBC driver
*Using ODBC to bring data into Excel
Applications can connect using the information stored in an ODBC data source or by passing in properties using a connection string. As you configure the Cloud Data Source and your application, you will be working with several sets of credentials and connection parameters. The following diagram shows which credentials are stored in the DataDirect Cloud connectivity service Data Source, which are specified in an ODBC data source (or in a connection string), and how the values map to each other.
